What are Energy Savings Certificates and what are they for?

The Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs) are documents that allow your company to recover part of its investment in energy-efficiency measures (such as replacing gas boilers with heat pumps, upgrading refrigeration equipment or improving insulation).

In other words, if your company consumes less energy as a result of an energy-efficiency improvement, it can do more than just reduce its energy bills. It may also be able to recover part of the investment through additional financial compensation.

In addition, CAEs may be available for improvements carried out within the last three years and are compatible with many grants and subsidies.

FAQs

We answer the most common queries regarding Energy Savings Certificates.

A CAE is an official electronic document that certifies the amount of final energy saved as a result of an energy-efficiency measure, such as the purchase of an electric vehicle or the installation of energy-efficient climate-control systems.

Each certificate represents 1 kWh of final energy saved, validated and certified by an accredited entity.

CAEs allow energy companies, known as obligated parties, to demonstrate compliance with their energy-saving targets to the National Energy Efficiency Fund (FNEE).

For individuals or companies that make the investment, they provide an opportunity to monetise energy savings and recover part of the cost of the improvements made. Measures that can generate CAEs include energy retrofit projects, upgrading to LED lighting, installing heat pumps, automating processes, upgrading to energy-efficient refrigeration equipment and compressors, implementing climate-control measures, and replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles.

No. Leyton handles the initial assessment, document management, technical verification and administrative processing at no cost to your business.

The financial value of a CAE is freely determined by the market between the parties involved — the beneficiary and the obligated party or its delegate — based on supply and demand.

This mechanism makes it possible to convert energy savings into revenue, helping to recover part of the investment made.

Yes. CAEs are transferable and may be bought and sold between the beneficiary of the energy savings and obligated parties or their delegates, in accordance with the procedures and controls established by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.

The initial owner is the party that makes the investment or carries out the energy-efficiency measure.

When the savings are assigned under an agreement to an obligated party or its delegate, ownership passes to that purchaser.

Yes. CAEs are compatible with most public grants and subsidies, provided that they are not financed by the National Energy Efficiency Fund (FNEE) and that the same energy savings are not funded twice.

Banco Santander works with Leyton, a specialist company and Delegated Party under the CAE System. Leyton is responsible for analysing the measures adopted, managing the required documentation, coordinating the technical verification and submitting the application to the competent authorities.
