What is an Energy Saving Certificate (CAE)?

The Energy Savings Certificate (Certificado de Ahorro Energético, or CAE for short) is a scheme recognised by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition that certifies the energy savings achieved when you replace your combustion-engine vehicle with an electric one.

By switching to electric, you reduce both your energy consumption and your emissions. These savings can be certified and converted into an additional financial incentive for you.

The CAE is purchased by an energy company to meet its energy efficiency obligations, while you are rewarded for contributing to more sustainable mobility.

FAQs

A CAE is an official electronic document that certifies the final amount of energy saved thanks to an energy efficiency measure, such as purchasing an electric vehicle or installing efficient air conditioning systems.

Each certificate equates to 1 kWh of final energy saved, validated and certified by an accredited entity.

CAEs allow energy companies, known as obligated parties, to demonstrate to the National Energy Efficiency Fund (FNEE) that they have met their energy-saving targets.

For the user or company making the investment, they represent an opportunity to monetise energy savings and recover some of the costs of improvements (e.g. upgrading vehicles, renewing lighting or installing aerothermal energy systems).

The economic value of a CAE is freely determined in the market between the parties (the beneficiary and the obligated or delegated entity) based on supply and demand.

This mechanism allows energy savings to be transformed into income, helping to recover part of the investment made.

Yes. CAEs are transferable and may be traded between the beneficiary of the savings and the obligated parties or their delegates, provided the procedures and controls established by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge are followed.

It can be requested by any individual who has:

  • Purchased a new 100% electric vehicle on or after 24 January 2023.
  • Permanently removed a combustion-engine vehicle from the vehicle register after owning it for at least one year.

The initial owner is the person/entity who makes the investment or energy efficiency action.

When this saving is transferred by contract to an obligated or delegated entity, ownership passes to this buyer.

Yes, it can be compatible as long as it does not come from the same energy saving fund.

In each case it is necessary to verify that there is no double financing for the same savings measure.

No. The regulations do not allow remuneration for the transfer of energy savings to exceed the total amount of the investment made.

The goal of the system is to encourage energy efficiency, not to generate disproportionate benefits.

Santander collaborates with Grintek, a partner specialising in the management of Energy Saving Certificates.

Once the customer shows interest in obtaining the incentive, Santander transfers their data to Grintek, which will contact them to request the necessary documentation and carry out all the procedures of the process.

In this way, the customer has expert support and comprehensive management of the CAE, from beginning to end.

Validation and payment usually take between 4 and 7 months.

To avoid delays, it is important for the documentation requested by Grintek to be correct, legible and complete. Grintek will contact you if it is necessary to correct or complete any document, in accordance with the requirements established by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
