Keep your software up to date

  • Software updates, in addition to offering new functionalities, also offer security patches to correct weaknesses detected since the most recent version was released. Make sure that your business' programs, anti-virus software and applications are always up to date.
  • Most devices and programs offer the possibility of configuring automatic updates. For those that don't, set reminders to update them manually. Remember that you should only update and download software from trusted sites.

Protect your website

  • Set your website up as an HTTPS website, meaning that the information reaching and leaving the server is automatically encrypted. Not only will this help to protect shared information, it will also instil trust in visitors and customers, as a padlock icon will be displayed in the navigation bar.
  • To make the switch from HTTP to HTTPS, you will need to buy a SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layers). The simplest way to do this is through your web hosting provider, asking them to install it for you.

Make regular backups

  • Backing up your business' information means that even should an incident occur, you can keep operating. Think about what data is essential to your day-to-day operations, these might include: customer details, orders, payments, etc. The more critical they are, the more often you should back them up.
  • Backups can be stored on a hard drive (preferably an external hard drive that is only connected when used) and/or the cloud. You can choose, although you should check the conditions in advance; for example, for cloud solutions, consider where the data will be stored, who will have access to them, how they are encrypted, etc.
